Love

My best friend of 10 years just moved away.  We've lived together for the last 5 years.  In the same apartment.  Tonight's the first night I've come home and he hasn't been either home, or on a short vacation.  My brain is just starting to comprehend this, and it's slowly tearing me apart inside.  There has been nothing in my life as static and familiar as he. Even now I'm finding gifts that he's left on my computer desk (seriously... as I stopped to think about what to say this sentence, I find part of a clay/plaster/I'm not sure what animal he made in the 5th grade).  I'm scared to find more, as I can barely keep from bawling as is.  He's also left the original bus ticket he had to come move to the city I was in at the time in my keyboard.  I can't even begin to fathom how a part of me has just.... up and left.  I love him so much, he was more than a brother or father to me.  We were part of each other.  He's only a few hours away, but that feels like an eternity.  I want to call in sick to work tomorrow, but I know he wouldn't want that for me.  We worked together this past two years.  More gifts... oh god.

That is all I have for the world tonight.  Hold on to those you love.  He and I, nothing can ever come between us.
He left a message on my computer for me, but I haven't read it.  I'm signing off now, because after I read it, I won't be functional on the computer for the rest of the night.   I'll be crying into my pillow.  It's better for both of us right now, but it still fucking hurts.  Until I'm back... au revoir.  And salaam.

Some Feel Good Music.

Alright.  I don't know if my readers enjoy GaGa, but I love this music.

I also love this cover:

INTRO:
It doesn't matter if you love him, or capital H-I-M
Just put your paws up'
cause you were Born This Way, Baby

VERSE:
MY MAMA TOLD ME WHEN I WAS YOUNG

SHE ROLLED MY HAIR AND PUT MY LIPSTICK ON
IN THE GLASS OF HER BOUDOIR

"THERE'S NOTHIN WRONG WITH LOVIN WHO YOU ARE"
SHE SAID, "'CAUSE HE MADE YOU PERFECT, BABE"

"SO HOLD YOUR HEAD UP GIRL AND YOU'LL GO FAR,
LISTEN TO ME WHEN I SAY"

CHORUS:
I'M BEAUTIFUL IN MY WAY
'CAUSE GOD MAKES NO MISTAKES
I'M ON THE RIGHT TRACK BABY
I WAS BORN THIS WAY

DON'T HIDE YOURSELF IN REGRET
JUST LOVE YOURSELF AND YOU'RE SET
I'M ON THE RIGHT TRACK BABY
I WAS BORN THIS WAY

POST-CHORUS:
OOO THERE AIN'T NO OTHER WAY
BABY I WAS BORN THIS WAY
BABY I WAS BORN THIS WAY
OOO THERE AIN'T NO OTHER WAY
BABY I WAS BORN-

Another Hero Story

Another Hero Story!

So, some guys tried to rob a jewelry store.  Bunch of em, getaway 'bikes' (mopeds really) and sledgehammers.

An old lady (fashionable old lady rather) with a handbag shows up to the rescue!
Maybe the world is changing?

Caught on video, see it here!

Heroes

We may be used to reading about fictional heroes, or seeing them on TV.  But when was the last time you read about someone in real life doing something truly heroic?

Today's story is about a lone man on a train who defended an 18-year old from being raped.  40 thieves had boarded the train, and this single soldier with a knife fought them off.  He didn't come close to killing all the thieves, but he did save the girl.

Some things deserve more than just recognition.

The tiered internet in Canada has begun.  Telecom Corporations have a green light to start charging per GB.  Some ISPs have limited the cap as low as 25 GB / month before they start charging you.  Just so you know, that about enough space to download 2 new computer games off of the web (and many game companies are providing this as an option, instead of buying a CD).

Beyond that, you're being charged up to $2 / GB above and beyond that.

This is ridiculous

And the image below?  That is the future.

Egypt Offline!

In recent news, Egypt has suddenly, for all intents and purposes, disappeared from the Internet.

Check it out here.

Pirate Time!

This is the Pirate Box.

My last post I mentioned I was a big fan of Open Source - a massive part of open source is the peer-to-peer network.  The Pirate Box is an invenstion by David Darts promoting Peer-to-peer communications.

The basic premise is to create a totally open filesharing server anywhere.  Check it out - and build one!

Apple Sucks.

Alright, today I'm going to open up that regular ol' can of worms.

I'm a PC user.

I don't like Apple.

Mac computers - pretty decent.  The company that makes them - the devil.

I get the appeal of Apple.  They've got an amazing ad campaign, and in theory, their computers are easier to use (frankly I find them overly difficult to use, but that's just me).

I suppose my big beef with Apple is that they hate everything that's not Apple.  Their commercials don't promote Apple products, they bash everyone else.  They don't let anyone have access to the hardware, they even went so far as to use (or possibly create) the most ridiculous screw ever so people couldn't open their hardware.

I'm a big open source kinda guy - and Apple sucks.

SSD

So, over the holidays I ordered a new SSD for my PC, as I hadn't had one yet.

For the uninformed, SSD means Solid State Drive. It's basically a different kind of hard drive, better in every way barring storage space. They're much smaller, much faster, and harder to break.

Anyway, after a fresh windows install, I discovered the 'under-10-second boot time'. After installing chipset & video drivers its up to about 23 seconds. Compared to the 2 minutes of before, this is brilliant. Finding things on the hard drive has proven faster, formatting was faster, and pretty much everything's been better.

Basically, I love my new SSD. It's amazing, and now I've got a ton of hard drive sorting to do for my couple terabytes of data.

A Quote

From one of my favourite books.
Credits go to Patrick Rothfuss on this one.

Words are pale shadows of forgotten names. As names have power, words have power. Words can light fires in the minds of men. Words can wring tears from the hardest hearts. There are seven words that will make a woman love you. There are ten words that will break a strong man’s will. But a word is nothing but a painting of a fire. A name is the fire itself.

Tech Survival

In this day and age, you have to be able to fix anything, anywhere.

What happens when they only way to stop a moving train on a collision course is to hack the console (obviously its an electronic train), but wait!  Someone smashed the screen!

Clearly you need to be able to output its video to your laptop device, which requires some software skill
But more importantly, without the hardware, you'd be lost!
